Cosmelan

Cosmelan is a professional depigmenting treatment that fully removes spots and prevents their reappearance for a short- and long-term outcome.

What is the Cosmelan treatment?

The Cosmelan procedure is the world’s leading professional pigmentation removal method. The treatment is suitable for all forms of hyperpigmentation from melasma, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, solar lentigo to ephelides (freckles) and can be used on all skin colours.

Why come to us for Cosmelan treatments?

At Authentic Aesthetics we continuously research the leading treatments available to give our clients the best possible results and when trying to find a long term solution for our melasma and pigmentation clients this is where we discovered Cosmelan. With an intense corrective effect Cosmelan regulates the overproduction of melanin in the melanocytes (pigment producing cells).
This inhibits and controls the appearance of new dark spots. It’s dual corrective and controlling action achieves both short and long-term results by keeping hyperpigmentation under control. The Cosmelan contains an exclusive combination of active substances with proven efficacy, which act on all phases of the hyperpigmentation process totally eliminating existing hyperpigmentation, preventing it reappearance and stopping the appearance of new dark spots with results visible in just 30-60 days.

Cosmelan FAQ's

Here are some frequently asked questions regarding Cosmelan

If you stick to the programme, follow the advice and continue to use a pigment regulator and high factor SPF then your pigmentation removal should be permanent.

Cosmelan works by using a complex mix of acids and retinoids to initiate skin renewal and resurfacing, alongside pigment regulators to control future pigmentation being made in the skin.

Yes, Cosmelan has a very high client satisfaction with the results but the process is not for everyone. You have to be extremely committed to the process and be sure to be using the products as instructed everyday, there are no days off from the at home maintenance so it’s important to consider if you can be compliant.

Cosmelan 1 is the professional stage of the Cosmelan process. It’s applied in clinic by a practitioner, it has the consistency of a mud mask. Once applied this must be left on the skin for 8-12 hours depending on your skin phototype.

This is the continual home care stage of the Cosmelan process. It’s applied at home by the client, this is the product that must be used for a full year following the Cosmelan process to prevent repigmentation. It is used 3 times per day for the first month after the professional application, 2 times per day for the following 2 months then just in the evening for the following 9 months.

Straight after removing the Cosmelan mask at home the skin will be red and feel sensitised, like mild sunburn. Peeling will then commence 2-3 days following this. During the first month following the Cosmelan peel, skin sensitivity, peeling & redness are all expected and normal reactions to the process. Most clients report the first 2 weeks are the hardest and then the sensitivity starts to become more manageable. After the first month the worst of the reactions should have subsided.

Your practitioner will give you a comprehensive explanation of what you will need to do to your skin following the Cosmelan peel. Our practitioners will message you regularly to check up on your progress and offer any additional advice needed, we are contactable 24/7.

Peeling will commence 2-3 days after the initial application, the worst of the peeling will happen during the first month but some peeling can continue for up to the 4 month mark.

Your end result will be seen 9-12 months after the initial treatment due to any dermal pigmentation potentially coming through at the 4-6 month mark. Most people are seeing a visible result after the first month however.

You can never cure pigmentation, it is formed due to a DNA damage to the melanocytes (pigment producing cells). Due to this the cells need to be constantly kept under control with pigment regulators and future damage needs to be prevented by using a high factor SPF. If you continue to use at least 1 pigment regulator, a high factor SPF and avoid sunbathing then your pigmentation should not return. Hormones are also important to consider as many people get their pigmentation during pregnancy, if you are not finished having children, wait to have your Cosmelan procedure until after this as the pigmentation can return during pregnancy.

Due to this it is impossible to give an exact number but the full cost over the full year will range from around £1800-£2500.

Cosmelan is generally used for new, superficial and mild-moderate pigmentation, whilst Dermamelan is a medical-grade peel used for deep, stubborn and moderate-severe pigmentation.

It is impossible to know exactly how much pigment removal you will get as part of the process, the goal with Cosmelan is to get 70%-100% removal of the pigmentation by the of the year process.

Laser can be a good option for sun damaged skin but the downsides are that it does not treat the root cause of the pigmentation so it will return, it is also not suitable for darker skin types.
Cosmelan is suitable for all skin types, effective on all types of pigmentation and deals with the root cause as well as lifting away existing pigmentation so you get long term results.

If the aftercare is used correctly, most people will only require 1 Cosmelan application. If you deviate from the treatment programme, have sun exposure following the treatment or use products not recommended by your Aesthetician it is likely that the pigmentation will return. Some people choose to have an additional treatment if they have not had total pigmentation removal but this is very rare.
