What are Thread Veins?

Thread veins are small capillaries (veins) which can appear on the face, neck, chest and legs. On the face, they are often a result of tiny blood vessels bursting which can be caused by increased pressure or sun damage. They are not dangerous and serve no purpose. Those who suffer from thread veins often feel the need to cover them up affecting their self-confidence.

Types of visible veins?

Telangiectasia – Individual broken veins found around the face, neck and chest

Spider veins – A cluster of veins webbed together resembling a spider’s web

Campbell de morgan – Also known as a blood spot, a pool of blood trapped under the skin, sometimes raised

Leg veins – These can vary in colour, typically red or purple. They need to be removed with stronger treatments such as laser or sclerotherapy

Varicose veins – Much thicker, protruding veins found on the legs; these need to be treated by a vascular surgeon

What can you do to remove facial thread veins?

Cosmeceutical skincare – Clinically proven redness reducing products can help to minimise the visible appearance of mild telangiectasia

Cauterisation – We use ACP (an advanced form of electrolysis) that involves using a probe with a current emitted to the end of it, by tapping this against the vein it’s cauterised, killing the blood supply

Thread veins can appear for many reasons including;
Sun damage
Age
Rosacea or other vascular skin conditions
Thinned skin
Work/lifestyle (they are common in people who work outside)
Temperature fluctuations (causing repeated vasoconstriction/vasodilation)

ACP (advanced electrolysis) involves using a probe with a current emitted to the end of it, by tapping this against the skin the dilated vein is cauterised causing it to close with minimal downtime. It is a safe treatment to be performed on all skin types and skin colours. You can have ACP anywhere on the upper body, however it is not suitable for treatment on the legs as these veins tend to be deeper and will require laser treatment or sclerotherapy.

Some medical/cosmeceutical grade skin care can reduce the appearance of thread veins but it is unlikely to completely remove them. For the best results ACP blemish removal or laser treatment is recommended.

Age – Thread veins can become more apparent as you age due to the skin becoming thinner and as a result of years of sun damage
Rosacea – If you have a pre existing vascular skin condition such as rosacea you are very likely to have visible thread veins
Thinned skin – Thinning skin can cause veins that are deeper in the skin to become more apparent on the surface of the skin
Work/lifestyle – Thread veins are very common if you work outdoors due to being exposed to the elements
Temperature fluctuations – Having regular temperature changes causes repeated vasoconstriction and vasodilation, resulting in the veins becoming permanently dilated and visible on the surface of the skin
