Why does our skin age?

When you are younger your skin works in a very productive way making plenty of Hyaluronic acid (hydration molecule), Elastin (keeps our skin bouncy) and Collagen (keeps our skin plump and youthful), however from the age of 20 your skin makes 1% less collagen and elastin every year. Its natural cell renewal process also slows down, resulting in the skin becoming lined, pigmented and wrinkled. External factors also contribute to premature ageing and lifestyle choices have a huge impact on your skin. Ageing is a fact of life, but looking your age is a choice!

What contributes to premature ageing?

  • Facial movement – We spend a lot of our life smiling and using our facial muscles to create facial expression. Over many years of doing this your muscles start to tighten and this is what leads to wrinkles being visible on the surface of the skin
  • Sun exposure – UVA rays in the sun contribute to premature ageing resulting in lines and wrinkles, UVB rays cause pigmentation and age spots
  • Smoking – This is one of the most damaging things you can do to your skin, as smoking starves your cells of vital oxygen needed for normal function
  • Pollution – A build up of pollution on the skin can cause pores to clog and result in skin damage
  • Drinking alcohol – Alcohol has been found to reduce the skin’s ability to form elastin fibres
  • Diet – Eating fast food and high sugar diets affect skin health and slows skin renewal processes
  • Make up – Wearing thick makeup that doesn’t let your skin breath slows down skin cycles
  • Not using the right products – Using high street moisturiser and not regularly cleaning or exfoliating the skin will disrupt skins natural function

What should the different age groups be doing to prevent and treat premature ageing?

  • Under 20’s – Focus on keeping your skin clean with a cleanser and protect it from sun damage with daily sun protection. Use mineral makeup to allow your skin to breath
  • 20’s – 30’s – Get a simple cosmeceutical skincare regime to support your skin’s natural function, do not buy high street products! Having regular HydraFacials are a fantastic way to keep your skin cycles renewing and give it a monthly deep clean. You are still at the preventative stage, so this is the best time to start anti-ageing as prevention is easier than cure
  • 30’s – 40’s – Time to get a bit more serious and step up the skincare to higher potency active ingredients such as retinols. Monthly HydraFacials are still recommended to improve overall skin health and adding in stimulating treatments such as microneedling or chemical peel treatments can be very beneficial to stimulate collagen and smooth lines
  • 40’s – 50’s – A good cosmeceutical skincare regime is still essential. Monthly HydraFacials are still recommended but with an added booster to deliver additional skin benefits your skin is lacking in, such as hydrators and peptides for collagen stimulation. Most clients are finding they are starting to get jowls at this stage of life, so this is when we would recommend the HydraTite treatment which includes radiofrequency to tighten the skin
  • 50’s – 60’s+ – A good cosmeceutical skincare regime is still essential, you may now be finding your skin is getting more dehydrated so more hydrating products will be therapeutic for your skin. Monthly HydraFacials will keep your skin functioning in a way that it did when it was younger. For the best results we recommend our non surgical face lift package which combines Hydratite and eTwo sublative treatments to get the best overall anti-ageing and skin tightening results

eTwo Sublative is the innovative way to resurface the skin using fractionated Radio-frequency. It smooths out wrinkles and crepey skin on the face, eyes and body while the heat element creates a tightening effect. It is safe for all skin types with minimal risk or downtime.

Radiofrequency skin tightening targets water molecules in the skin to create a heat build up in the dermal (living) layer of the skin where collagen is made. By creating heat this stimulates collagen and elastin production to lift and tighten the skin.

The treatment creates a controlled wound to the skin to stimulate collagen formation and results in rejuvenated skin. It effectively treats acne scarring, body scars, lines and wrinkles, open pores, stretch marks and can be used to generally rejuvenate and freshen up the skin.

A chemical peel is a non-invasive way to improve the appearance of your skin. It works by using a chemical solution to smooth the texture of your skin by removing the damaged surface layers.

Ageing - Lines and Wrinkles FAQs

Botox and fillers are most commonly used for the reduction of lines and wrinkles, however injectables are not a route that everyone wants to go down. For a more natural alternative, resurfacing treatments such as microneedling and ablative lasers can be used to create a controlled wound to the skin and stimulate collagen regeneration. By stimulating new collagen production this retextures the skin, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles while allowing your face to continue to move and look more natural.

Lines are more superficial and closer to the skin’s surface, whereas wrinkles are more deep set and stay visible when the face is relaxed.

We spend a lot of our life smiling and using our facial muscles to create facial expression. Over many years of doing this your muscles start to tighten and this is what leads to wrinkles being visible on the surface of the skin.

You cannot stop the ageing process but you can make changes to your lifestyle and skincare routine to slow it down, these include:

  • Quit smoking if you are a smoker
  • Add more antioxidants to your diet such as berries and oily fish high in omega 3
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and using low molecular weight hydrators
  • Use cosmeceutical or medical grade skincare
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and wear a high factor SPF daily
  • Get enough sleep
  • Try to reduce stress

This is usually due to environmental or lifestyle factors. Exposure to UV rays is the most leading cause for premature ageing, the UV light and exposure to sunlight age skin faster. Lack of sleep, bad diet and stress can also be a contributing factor to your skin suddenly looking older.

  • Botox – Cosmetic injections that temporarily reduce muscle contractions in areas such as crows feet, frown lines.
  • Collagen induction therapy – Resurfacing treatments such as microneedling and ablative lasers can be used to create a controlled wound to the skin and stimulate collagen regeneration. By stimulating new collagen production this retextures the skin, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles while allowing your face to continue to move and look more natural.
  • Chemical peels – Improves and smoothes the skin’s outermost layers.
  • HydraFacial – Deep cleans the skin and delivers key nutrients to make the skin work in a way that it did when it was younger.
  • Regular alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Bad diet with high levels of sugar and unhealthy fat
  • Lack of proper sleep
  • Having sun exposure
  • Living a high stress lifestyle

Use a gentle cleanser, retinoids, a richer face cream full of peptides, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, have a good diet, use an SPF daily.

As we age the skin naturally losses laxity and firmness, fat in the deeper layers of the skin starts to diminish causing an uneven texture known as wrinkles on the surface of the skin.

Do use an SPF 50 daily
Do maintain a balanced diet
Do use skincare essential to skin health such as antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid
Don’t neglect the Décoletage (neck and chest) when doing skincare
Don’t smoke
Don’t use sun beds

While drinking is essential for your overall health, including skin health, there is no definitive research supporting the claim that drinking water will reduce wrinkles.

Prevention is always easier than cure and it’s best to start taking anti-ageing measures in your 20’s to prevent wrinkles forming. There are temporary fixes such as having microneedling, ablative treatments or botox, however you cannot stop the ageing process fully and no treatments are permanent. Top up treatments are needed to keep the effects long term.

The best way to target wrinkles is through medical treatments that are performed in a clinic by a trained practitioner.

  • Use a high factor, broad spectrum SPF 50 daily
  • Maintain a balanced diet with reduced sugar and alcohol consumption
  • Use high quality cosmeceutical/medical skincare essential to skin health such as antioxidants, peptides, retinoids and hyaluronic acid. Be sure to bring them down to your neck and decolletage as well as your face
  • Avoid smoking and using sun beds
  • Visit a skin clinic – Authentic Aesthetics in kenilworth are a well established skin clinic with over 20 years industry experience, they offer a full skin consultation where you are given a skin analysis which shows the different cross sections of the skin.
